In the year 3 of the Meiji era (1870), the impact of the Haibutsu Kishaku movement led to the disappearance of Koshoji, which was once present on Noumurajima.

Subsequently, driven by the passion of local believers from Nomurajima, Hanajima, and Kawayokeshin, they reconstructed the former residence of monks known as "Hoppouan," dating back to the Koka period around 1844, into a preaching hall. In the 12th year of the Meiji era (1879), it was renamed as "Kouenji," and to this day, it has been passed down through five generations of priests.

Kouenji is a Jodo Shinshu temple, and its main hall's outer area is covered with tatami mat flooring, serving a significant role as a place for hearing the Dharma rather than for ascetic practice. Following the teachings of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu during the Kamakura period, the temple is dedicated to exclusive devotion to Amida Buddha.

The inner sanctuary of the main hall is decorated with gold leaf, replicating the beauty of the Pure Land. At its center lies the main image, Amida Buddha, exuding a sense of serenity and grandeur. Amida Buddha is portrayed standing, as it is believed that he delivers sermons from the Pure Land and cannot sit still in his eagerness to save us.

Additionally, the splendid carvings depict Karyoubinga, a celestial being with a human upper body and a bird's lower body, renowned for her beautiful singing. During the Edo period, the term "Karyoubinga" was often used to praise exceptionally beautiful and melodious women.

In the fifth year of the Reiwa era (2023), eight Buddhist images were generously donated, allowing visitors to appreciate bodhisattva and tathagata images also revered in Shingon Buddhism. These donations symbolize Kouenji's openness to followers from various Buddhist sects and its emphasis on solidarity within the local community.

Kouenji does not have a congregation of its own but thrives through the support of the local community and generous donations. Its location is nestled within Tonami Heiya, one of Japan's largest dispersed settlements, surrounded by picturesque mountains and abundant waters.

During the Meiji era, it even served as a local elementary school, playing a crucial role within the community. People from the region gathered here to listen to the exclusive teachings of Jodo Shinshu as propagated by Shinran Shonin. Particularly during the annual Houonkou festival (November 14-15), both clergy and pilgrims congregate, making it one of the largest temples in the region.

In recent times, the number of foreign visitors has increased, and Kouenji warmly welcomes people from all backgrounds. Even a simple act of clasping your hands in front of Amida Buddha can provide a precious moment of inner peace. Within the main hall, illustrations and words are on display, offering new perspectives and peaceful insights, even to children.
